ABOUT THE BOOK
Keep your family close, because your enemies are closer.
University student Matt Pine has just received devastating news. Nearly his entire family have been found dead while holidaying in Mexico. The local police claim it was an accident, but the FBI aren’t convinced – and they won’t tell Matt why.
The tragedy thrusts his family into the media spotlight again. Seven years ago, Matt’s older brother, Danny, was sentenced to life in prison for murdering his teenage girlfriend. Danny has always sworn he was innocent, and last year, a true crime documentary that claimed he was wrongfully convicted went viral.
Now his family’s murder is overlapping with Danny’s case, Matt is determined to uncover the truth behind the crime that sent his brother to prison. Even if it means putting his own life in danger, and confronting his every last fear.
Read this gripping thriller, perfect for fans of Karin Slaughter and Lisa Jewell.
Matt’s family stood behind his brother Danny seven years ago when he was arrested and committed to prison for murdering his girlfriend. Then only a year ago, a documentary claimed that Danny had been innocent, but the case wasn’t re-opened.
Now, Matt’s dad, mum, sister and little brother have been found dead in a holiday home in Mexico. When the FBI tell Matt the lastest horrors, they say he has to go to Mexico to talk to the authorities so that their bodies can be released. Matt feels that there is something very wrong with their deaths. But to find out the truth, he has to take a step back in time.
The story drops back to a time before the family go on holiday to Mexico. It always feels quite sad to be a fly on the wall, knowing that they will all soon be dead, but it made my mind work overtime to see if I could pick anything up on the way that could have stopped them from dying.
In the present day, Matt and an FBI agent are trying to make sense of present-day events and Danny’s case from years before. The story is tense, no matter what timeline it takes. Matt has a support network that is there every step of the way. Then I got to a point where I was so engrossed in the story that I let it lead me, and I didn’t want to solve it, but to ride every page and feel every moment as it happened.
What a tremendous ending! Oh boy, it knocked me sideways. I read so many of the final chapters feeling numb, and it is a heart-breaking story. It was a double whammy. I was crumpled. A recommended read.
Thank you to the publisher for a copy of this book which I have reviewed honestly.
