Fiona's Guardians by [Dan Klefstad]

When a vampire seduces you, death is minutes away. When she hires you, you’ll soon wish you were dead.

It’s a truth known to every guardian who worked for Fiona, including Daniel. Aside from managing the day to day chores and keeping her protected, he manages an investment portfolio to buy stolen blood from hospital workers. The 250-year-old Fiona needs 10 pints of human blood every night. As a result of this, Daniel and Fiona are always on the lookout for police, but fail to notice their gradual encirclement by Mors Strigae, an ancient order of monks dedicated to the extermination of vampires. Gone for a century, the monks start a new war when they destroy Fiona’s sire. This time, her vampire family is pushed to the edge of extinction — and the humans who serve them are hunted and executed.

After 35 years, what keeps him loyal? And will he ever be allowed to leave?

Fiona’s Guardians

This is such a deliciously dark and compelling book to get your teeth into and pump up your blood pressure. Fiona is totally desirable and impossible to say no to no matter what your intentions are to start with. At 250 years old she has perfected every way to achieve ultimate pleasure levels for herself and partners. The Guardians that keep her safe would gladly die to save her and in this story that is exactly what they do.

The Catholic church has been a little quiet over these last few decades but now a rather elite team of hunters are ready to wipe vampires and their Guardians out for once and for all. The Mors Strigae is society as old as the vampires themselves and they have been gathering and perfecting their execution methods.

Daniel is an employee that left mundane and scrapping by behind thirty-five years ago to manage Fiona’s daily blood needs and keep her safe while growing rich himself. Now it is the time to reap the rewards.

The characters on both sides make riveting reading, where I loved real historical moments commented on as they passed by, which give the story a timeline. The deaths are quite spectacular and the comebacks frenzied, passionate and wild. A very modern now feel to the story with twerks to the vampire abilities while still keeping the core of hunters well and truly recognisably present.

This is a new direction for this author and he has done it magnificently. Highly recommended reading.

I wish to thank the author and his publisher Burton Mayers for an e-copy of this book which I have reviewed honestly.

My latest novel, Fiona’s Guardians, is about humans who work for a beautiful manipulative vampire. It’s available for pre-order ahead of its October release. My latest short story, “Who Killed Publishing?” has almost nothing to do with the undead. You’ll find it in the Summer, 2020, edition of Literary Heist. I’m currently looking for a home for another short story, “Cowboy Load.” I write in DeKalb, Illinois, and Williams Bay, Wisconsin.
