You’d do anything for family … wouldn’t you?

Grace thought her sister had the perfect life.

She was wrong.

And now she must pay the price.

When Glory dies in a car crash, Grace discovers her sister wasn’t who she thought she was. Her unassuming vegan café turns out to be a front for criminal activities. What’s worse: Grace was made an unwitting accomplice. Why?

When the Glasgow gangsters come knocking, Grace battles to keep her fingers clean and protect her family … but is that what her family want?

As the pressure mounts and more secrets come to light, Grace grows convinced Glory was murdered. But no-one will listen.

Seeking justice, she finds betrayal.

In Servitude: a psychological suspense novel

What a heartbreaking opening. In the first chapter Grace is told that her sister Glory has been killed in the road accident. In the subsequent chapters she discovers that she had lost the sister she thought she had a long time ago because this was like some hellish alternate universe. Had her sister been murdered? And could she have possibly been the criminal that these low say she was?

Grace is a top class lady whose first thought was to protect her sister’s family from finding out what Glory had been up to her neck in! Glory had a perfect life, loving husband, 2 kids and a her own business so what had gone wrong. I can’t even imagine the bitterness and hurt that Grace was feeling.

This story makes you really think about every what if because it pushes family loyalties to the ultimate limit in every possible sense, with so many moral judgement calls and shocking disclosures, excuses and shift of blame. Grace was like a child seeing the world around her for the very first time and finding things out that couldn’t be forgotten.

I was continually shocked with how the story developed and loved how Grace found the courage to keep pushing for the truth even though inside she was anything but calm. Grace is a super character that you just know will never give up. A story that makes you wonder if you ever really know your family, close friends and even yourself.

The story is edgy from the beginning to dramatic conclusion. A superb debut from an author with a dark mind. Super excited to see what comes next from her.

Heleen Kist is a Dutch quintilingual Stanford-educated globetrotting career woman who fell in love with a Scotsman and his country, and now writes about its (sometimes scary) people from her garden office in Glasgow.

She was selected as an ‘up and coming new writer’ and awarded a Spotlight at Bloody Scotland 2018, the International crime writing festival.

Her debut psychological suspense novel ‘In Servitude’ was inspired by Heleen’s nationally recognised expertise in small business finance mixed with her friend’s courageous idea to open a vegan cafe in a city renowned for its dubious diet.

She is currently working on her next book, which will also be a suspense novel.
