Remorseless – a tale of obsession, lust and revenge. Part murder mystery, part psychological chiller, this unique, dark, serial killer thriller is a real page turner. A tense, disturbing British crime novel full of suspense, intriguing twists and a double figure bodycount.
Can criminal profiler, Doc Powers, unravel the truth about a psychopathic parolee in time to prevent him wreaking bloody revenge on those he blames for his incarceration – including Doc himself?
First in The Remorseless Trilogy featuring Doc Powers, Forensic Psychologist, and introducing Detective Inspector Carver, his ‘partner in crime’. Their second and third investigations – Mutilated and Gaslighting – are also available.
For all lovers of psycho thrillers containing plenty of twists and genuinely evil characters.
Remorseless has been described as ‘brutal, ‘intense’ and ‘frightening’ by some readers and is certainly not for the faint-hearted. If you need a trigger warning, this thrilling series is probably not for you.
‘Patching goes where other authors fear to tread.’ – Top Amazon Reviewer
From the back cover of the paperback edition:
Peter Leech is a cunning, devious killer, brutalized by half a lifetime in prison for the vicious murder of his parents. Now he’s up for parole and, one way or another, he wants out.
He’s driven by his obsessive lust for Judy Finch – an attractive parole officer who spurned his advances – and his thirst for revenge on those he blames for his conviction.
His nemesis, Doc Powers, the forensic psychiatrist who assessed his mental health for trial, is now on the panel reviewing Leech’s parole application. But Doc fears for his own sanity. His feelings of guilt over his wife’s death and his terrible experiences as a criminal profiler threaten to overwhelm him. Hallucinations haunt Doc as he struggles to convince his colleagues that Leech is a dangerous unreformed psychopath.
A blossoming relationship with Judy helps Doc heal – emotionally and professionally – but he soon discovers he’s ill-prepared for Leech’s re-entry into his life…
HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS AND REVIEW
Although this book may not show as a sale, I have actually bought it through Amazon as a trilogy but feel that each book should have its own review.
This novel is right up there with my other ‘rather twisted reads’ collection. The ones that make you edgy even before you get in bed and turn off the lights, so a huge compliment to the author, Will Patching, who is new to me because not many make it up there. A good book to me isn’t the walk home when I finish work listening to a book at 1 am in the morning, it is hesitating to actually go inside when I get there, that’s a good book!
I loved meeting Peter Leech, a real complexed character that didn’t quite see the world as someone normal does. After serving 18 years in prison for the murder of his parents, he had established himself pretty early on as ‘don’t frigging mess with me unless you want to live celibate for ever,’ kind of guy. He knew how to play the system and knew how to play the rookie parole officer, Judy Finch, that came to interview him but his twisted mind made everything she said into ‘I want you’. Leech had found his Little Birdie. Now I am not that many chapters in and I am thinking this is going to be a bit of a heart racer. It was time to bring out the Statins because it wasn’t just his blood pressure rising!
Doc Power the forensic psychiatrist had helped put him away and was now a bit of an advisory to Finch. I really took to Doc straightaway a rather damaged bloke himself that kept blanking out because of issues he needed to deal with in his life. When Leech gets his parole, the smelly stuff hits the fan. Leech is on a mission to deal with his past before tracking down his future. Yep in his mind everything is going to come up rosy.
This is an outstanding start to a series. The characters are fascinating from all sides of the law which keeps the story at an hi-octane level through out. One thing was for sure Leech was straight in there working to his plan from day one. But that meant that there simply wasn’t a book mark place at any point as each chapter brought something gob smacking to the story, whether in present day or from the past.
Doc was conducting his own investigating and tracking down as much of the past as he was the present, both which would come spectacularly together. An absolute cracking read I am biting at the bit wanting to get into the second book of this series. Superb!
HERE IS A LITTLE ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Will Patching writes gritty crime stories that mix murder mystery, psychological suspense and intense thrills while offering unique insights into the darker side of human nature. His ‘pull no punches’ style and sparse but often brutal descriptive passages will not suit all readers, so if you are into cozy mysteries you might want to look elsewhere!
With complex plots and rounded characters, Will’s novels are necessarily longer than average, usually well over 100,000 words, so these are definitely stories designed for readers who like to really get their teeth into a good yarn!
Now considered something of an expert on psychopaths, thanks to his extensive research and personal experience of people with this personality disorder, Will set up a popular website to help lay readers understand these destructive individuals and why their existence is so important to society in general.
To visit the site:
Will’s writing draws heavily on this expertise but his novels are designed to entertain rather than educate – though many readers appreciate both aspects of his writing. He is currently working on completing two trilogies, though each novel is a self-contained story.
The first novel in each trilogy, Remorseless and The Hack, are already published, with the sequels due in late 2016 and early 2017 respectively. The third and final installments are expected by the end of 2017.
Will Patching was born and raised in ‘Sarf Lunnon’, Engerland, or at least, that’s how he pronounces it! Hence, many scenes from his novels are situated in London, the surrounding suburbs and other parts of southeast England, though they also span as far afield as Thailand and the USA.
His approach to writing is to hit the reader with hard truths about the world we live in, and his mysteries, thrillers, and suspense novels are designed to get your pulse pounding. One male reader decided he needed to check his door locks late one night while reading Remorseless and subsequently commented on social media:
Will’s eclectic professional experience – from his teenage role as a ‘gardener’ weeding sewage treatment filter beds, through flying a Hawk jet very fast, very low and very dangerously before the RAF realised and booted him out, then attending Harvard on a course for potential CEOs, largely thanks to the Peter Principle of promotion, and more recently, to building his dream, a charter yacht that sank in SE Asian waters – all have led to a rich and varied life, often reflected in his writing.
