Firstly I wish to thank Rachel Gilbey of Rachel’s Random Resources for inviting me on the Blog Tour for Absolute Darkness by Tina O’Hailey

A thrill ride through time that will make you hold your breath.

Sitting by the campfire, Brandy admitted a secret to her friends. She swore she saw a ghost when exiting a cave earlier that day. Was she seeing things? Did they believe her? The next day, breaking a cardinal rule, she snuck back to the cave alone. No one knew where she was. What if she fell or was trapped? There would be no rescue.

For ten thousand years Alexander had kept the time streams of this universe safe from an eternal destructive force that continually threatened to tamper and destroy all. Locked in an unremitting battle, the two foes become sidetracked by an unexpected visitor. An entangled journey begins with chilling twists and turns until becoming locked into an inescapable death deep within a submerged cave.

Who will come out of the watery depths alive?

Brandy has rappelled into a pit and in the process became knocked unconscious, just missing breaking her neck, and is hanging from the rope inches from the bottom of the pit. This is how Alexander first meet’s Brandy in linear time. Unconscious. Inverted. In the dark.

Alexander studied her for a moment. Legs dangling from the hung harness. No blood. She was moving. He didn’t dare shift in time to prevent her fall. It was too dangerous for both of them. He was blind to where things were in time during the day. Instead, he placed the weight of her body on his bent leg, and un-wedged the ascender. With that free, he lowered her body to the ground, gently. Her helmet scraped against the rock wall with the shifting of her weight.

“…uck,” she intoned.

Alexander touched her face. Warmth. “You are a surprise.” His voice, deep, slow, each syllable molded and articulated from a lifetime of infinite time.

“Off rope,” she whispered and then came awake with a start. She stared at Alexander, blinked for a moment and then blurted, “Where the hell is your helmet?” She tried to look around; hands reached up to free her head. “And your light?” She sat up and winced. “Damn. Wait. Hold on a sec.” She tentatively touched the shattered light on her helmet. A click then a small dim light cut the dark and shone bright in Alexander’s face. Brown eyes, yellow flecks. “Good enough.” She patted the backup light tied to the side of her helmet with plastic electrical ties.

Alexander held her arm as she tried to stand. Her gloved hands left smudges on his pale white skin. “Are you sure you should stand just yet?” He placed a strong hand on her shoulder.

“Weren’t you over there?” She pointed to the wall then looked at Alexander’s visage. Her light shone across moccasin feet, loose black shirt and odd pants, then back up to his face. Brown eyes, dark eyebrows, sharp nose and a tangle of wavy hair. Recognition, then surprise crossed her face. She flinched with its impact.

“Holy Hell,” a breathy exclamation. “You…you’re…yesterday.” She paused and looked closely at his eyes. His steady gaze held hers. “I saw you. When I was leaving the cave.” A snort of embarrassment. She glanced down, escaping his gaze. “I swear, I thought you were a ghost.”

Well if you like reading paranormal romance novels then you are in for a real treat with this. The setting is unusual as quite a bit of it takes place underground in the caves and caverns being explored by a couple of friends. For one I can’t even imagine the adrenaline rush that anyone must get to do this, as I loved the descriptions of how they wiggled and struggled to just push that bit further through the tight spaces. I was just transfixed holding my breath with them, thinking of ways myself that could make them slide through. Then add the element of water and my own heart nearly leapt from my chest. Tina O’Hailey really knows how to make you feel like you are there.

The two friends, Susan and Brandy always go exploring together and work like one, each totally confident in their friend. Well that was until one day when Brandy saw something  and decided to go back and take a look by herself. One minute everything was ok the next she was wakening up with a strange man looking down at her. From here, her life and that of Alexander would change forever.

Alexander is like no-one you have met before, well apart from he is totally gorgeous, caring and about ten thousand years too old for Brandy. There are some other pretty unusual traits that would keep them apart too but when another entity comes into the picture it gets really interesting. Bloody hell this story took off at speed and I found myself gasping, feeling frustrated and loving every minute of it.

What I loved was that is wasn’t just a boy meets girl story, this had substance, there was a story line raging way before they met that finally gives the bad guy that edge he has been waiting for. It is heart in your mouth scenes with those adrenaline rushes with heart melting moments of romance to balance it all out. This author has got it perfect for me.

The story will totally entertain you in every possible way. Very unusual setting, super love story and heart pounding pages. Super read!

Thank you to Rachel of Rachel’s Random Resources for an e-copy of this book which I have reviewed honestly.
