Nail-bitingly modern domestic noir A tense, Hitchcockian psychological thriller Louise Voss returns with her darkest, most chilling, novel yet

Lynn Naismith gave up the job she loved when she married Ed, the love of her life, but it was worth it for the happy years they enjoyed together. Now, ten years on, Ed has been diagnosed with early-onset dementia, and things start to happen; things more sinister than lost keys and missing words. As some memories are forgotten, others, long buried, begin to surface … and Lynn’s perfect world begins to crumble. But is it Ed’s mind playing tricks, or hers…?

The Old You

I just can’t think of anything worse than losing my mind to dementia, or maybe I can, I think that seeing my soul mate disappear before my eyes, as he became a stranger that did not know me, must be the ultimate heartbreak. I am a sucker for true love stories with happy ever after endings and so far Lynn and Ed had that. OK they hadn’t met in the traditional way by any means, that is a story in itself, but they had been through their fair share of hard times and  found comfort in each other. Now it was disappearing before their eyes and with Ed so much older than her, she was beginning to feel robbed of her own life. But what if there was the chance of a cure. A new but very hush, hush trial.

Let the mind games begin!

Well this was an iceberg that went into melt down as there had been far more going on below the surface than I first thought. I was left totally open-mouthed as the story jumped back to the past and then present day and just blown away with both. It really does have that Hitchcock air about it, as I began dissecting everyone in the story and feeling quite paranoid about all of the characters because the more I got to know them, the more I felt that everyone had something to hide.

Just when I thought that the story was coming to an end there was a ‘and then’ continuation that just kept wowing me at every little twist ‘and then’ there was another ‘and then’ another. Oh I was in my element and talking to the book in my really got into this story mode. I really loved how Lynn developed throughout the story but to be honest all the characters were spot on. Brilliant plot!

I wish to thank Anne Cater and Orenda Books for a copy of this book which I have reviewed honestly.
