When Hazel disappears, the police are convinced that her husband, Alex, has killed her. Three years after his conviction for murder, Alex and his sister, Alice, are devastated when their last appeal is rejected by the courts. With nowhere left to turn, Alice must start to put her life back together. Living in limbo herself, Alice has a chance encounter with Steve, an ex-solider turned PI who offers to look at the case files. Steve is convinced that the prosecution’s case is shaky at best, but can he find out the truth before it’s too late for Alex?

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS AND REVIEW
What I love about reading is finding that author now and again that just makes your heart race that little bit more because the story and the way it is told just has that something extra special about it, well this is one of those. I believe that this is Roger Bray’s second novel but you really wouldn’t know it, it is so darn good.
Oh boy this is a little belter. When Hazel disappeared her husband, Alex, was accused and found guilty of her murder although her body had never been found. A couple of years down the line and all the avenues of appeals have now been used so he was resigned to life in prison. Alex’s sister, Alice had never given up fighting his corner, it though it had cost her everything. When Alice met Steve there was something about him that made her do something she never did, she told him about her brother and OMG this story just exploded with everything thing I want in a thriller.
This is more than just proving that someone is innocent, this is also an investigation into what really happened because the trail has now gone well and truly cold surrounding the events the night that Hazel disappeared. There is of course a romance sparking in the midst of the story too. This isn’t heavy stuff, the case of Hazel is the core of the book but I really wanted Alice to find happiness as well as her brother finding justice.
It is so difficult sometimes to review because I am bursting with what happens. Roger Bray took me to some pretty dark places and some pretty terrifying moments that I know would drive me insane. There is deception and lies, there is facing lose and keeping hope. I love this book and I am sure that I have developed a crush on Steve myself, what a man!
Roger Bray gives you all the known facts before grabbing you and bang! You really won’t know what has hit you and won’t be able to stop until you know the truth. Loved the characters, especially Alice and Steve. The story is easy to follow because what is happening is so gripping. A huge must read book!
I originally read and reviewed this book under the title of When a Dream Turns Deadly
HERE IS A LITTLE ABOUT THE AUTHOR
I have always loved writing; putting words onto a page and bringing characters to life. I can almost feel myself becoming immersed into their lives, living with their fears and triumphs. Thus, my writing process becomes an endless series of questions. What would she or he do, how would they react, is this in keeping with their character? Strange as it sounds, I don’t like leaving characters in cliffhanging situations without giving them an ending, whichever way it develops. My life to date is what compels me to seek a just outcome, the good will overcome and the bad will be punished. More though, I tend to see my characters as everyday people in extraordinary circumstances, but in which we may all find our selves if the planets align wrongly or for whatever reason you might consider. Of course, most novels are autobiographical in some way. You must draw on your own experiences of life and from events you have experienced to get the inspiration. My life has been an endless adventure. Serving in the Navy, fighting in wars, serving as a Police officer and the experiences each one of those have brought have all drawn me to this point, but it was a downside to my police service that was the catalyst for my writing. Medically retired after being seriously injured while protecting a woman in a domestic violence situation I then experienced the other side of life. Depression and rejection. Giving truth to the oft said saying that when one door closes another opens I pulled myself up and enrolled in college gaining bachelor and master degrees, for my own development rather than any professional need. The process of learning, of getting words down onto the page again relit my passion for writing in a way that I hadn’t felt since high school.
So here we are, two books published and another on track. Where it will take me I have no idea but I am going to enjoy getting there and if my writing can bring some small pleasure into people’s lives along the way, then I consider that I will have succeeded in life.
