In Bluette Matthey’s latest book, Engadine Aerie, protagonist Hardy Durkin heads to St. Moritz and the stunning Engadine Valley in Switzerland’s Alps for the annual Skimarathon. What could possibly go wrong? Lots, if you’re Hardy Durkin. Murder, an illicit arms deal, attempted murder, and running aground of a seasoned professional poisoner. Kinky sex is an add-on.
HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS AND REVIEW
What a super idea for a book which is a sort of mix of Wish You Were Here and 007 and it worked brilliantly for me.
This was my first venture into this series, which I read without any problems as a stand alone book. My only regret is that I want to visit the other destinations and find out what Hardy Durkin got up to in them too. What a super character he is. He is certainly at home rubbing shoulders with the rich and famous but he would fit in with anyone either out with the blokes or someone for the ladies to do a little swooning over.
Poor Hardy lending a hand to a friend and helping with her ski school when an unusual soft bump in the snow is found to be a dead body. A rather nasty shock for the class but a new and intriguing case for this amateur super sleuth. Now I really loved his investigating that had the act first think later scenes in it, what a hero. A little swoon here. A bomb, a clever poisoning and a relationship that is a little jaw dropping are only the tip of this rather large ice burg. Plus a very wise bird. I really enjoyed the inclusion of the falcon in the story, what clever birds they are.
There are the most beautiful descriptions of these off the beaten track places in the book that were steeped in history but most of all I liked that the author actually travels to these places to research them and get a proper feel for the area not just look it up on line. I really felt like I was seeing the towns and ski slopes through her eyes as she had seen them. Super combination of this lady’s talents.
I wish to thank the author for an ARC of this book which I have chosen to review.
