A STAR RECKONERS LOT by DARRELL DRAKE#fantasy#myths#legends#kickstarter@MarvyMagpies

For some, loss merely deprives. For others, it consumes.

Ashtadukht is a star-reckoner. The worst there’s ever been. Witness her treacherous journey through Iranian legends and ancient history.

Only a brave few storytellers still relate cautionary glimpses into the life of Ashtadukht, a woman who commanded the might of the constellations—if only just, and often unpredictably. They’ll stir the imagination with tales of her path to retribution. How, fraught with bereavement and a dogged illness, she criss-crossed Sassanian Iran in pursuit of creatures now believed mythical. Then, in hushed tones, what she wrought on that path.

How I love this genre, that of fantasy, where an author can take you where ever he likes and create the impossible. It is normally highly descriptive and very visual to a reader because they have nothing to compare it to. Well Darrell Drake does it all a little different, he filters out little bits of information so it is a little like a jigsaw where you store the pieces and fit it all together when you have all the relevant information. It works superbly as the fascination of just wanting to know more was over powering and intriguing.

Darrell Drake takes you on a massive step back in time to a pre-Islamic Iran when it was part of the Sassanian Empire. Then adds the myths and legends of the time. I suppose you could in one respect say that this is a story of conjurers and demons giants and revenge but it is far more than that. There are battles, vicious and bloody and a crudeness at times but it has that essence of something very special. The story is built up from three main characters.

Ashtadukht is a Star Reckoner so has the ability, and I use this term loosely, to bring together the power of the constellations and use its force. This is really her story and how she seeks revenge after her husband is murdered by a Div, demon. Tirdad is Ashtadukht’s cousin, faithful and loyal to her he is her body guard and will protect her. Then finally making up this unlikely trio is Waray. Waray is a half Div, this has resulted in her having half human traits and the reptilian features of the Div too. Don’t even think of the mating that went on there. She was my ultimate favourite character in the story, a totally unpredictable girl, full of mischief and a more than unhealthy addiction to one particular food. She always brought a smile to my face.

This trio journey through the lands of Sassanian in the pursuit of one of the most vile of Divs and what an action packed journey this was. I love a book where your mind keeps drifting back to the story and living moments again. A brilliant book for fantasy readers. I wish to thank Darrell Drake for a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Darrell Drake has published four books, with A Star-Reckoner’s Lot being the latest. He often finds himself inspired by his research to take on new hobbies. Birdwatching, archery, stargazing, and a heightened interest in history have all become a welcome part of his life thanks to this habit.
